Recapping Last Weekend

Jurassic World made it three-for-three by topping the weekend box office again this weekend. The film’s ticket sales have dropped about 49 percent each of the last two weekends, which means a lot less when your debut sets a box office record. Jurassic made $54.5 million in its third weekend of release.

Inside Out had a solid second weekend with $52.3 million for second place. The excellent animated film should also have a solid holiday weekend. The so wrong, but so funny Ted 2 debuted to $33.5 million for third place. Max debuted to $12.2 million for fourth place while Spy stayed in the top five with $7.9 million in its fourth weekend of release.

Max had an estimated budget of less than $20 million

Terminator Genisys

Terminator Genisys is called “an ill-advised sequel” by The Verge. i09 says that “Arnold somehow saves Terminator Genisys from being a total disaster”.

If you go to see Terminator Genisys, take note of the CyberDane Systems headquarters. The headquarters are modeled off the real-life offices of Oracle. Why Oracale? David and Megan Ellison, offspring of Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, produced the film. Megan Ellison has used money given to her by her father to set up Annapurna Pictures, a company that has bankrolled films like Zero Dark Thirty, Her, American Hustle Lawless, Foxcatcher.  Three of her films have been nominated for an Oscar for Motion Picture of the Year, including Her and American Hustle last year. Annapurna also has a pretty awesome website with an amazing promotional video.

David Ellison has also used the family money to make the world a better place through film. His producer credits include Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Jack Reacher, World War Z and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. He is scheduled to produce Top Gun 2 as well as sequels to Jack Reacher, World War Z, Star Trek Into Darkness and Mission Impossible.

ScreenRant predicts Terminator Genisys will bring in $32 million at the box office this weekend.

Magic Mike XXL

I don’t know what MaryAnn Johanson of the Riverfront Times thought she was seeing when she saw Magic Mike XXL, but it was apparently a completely different movie. Wait, nevermind. She knew this was the sequel to a movie she hated. While she thinks women don’t want this, I know plenty of women who do. They don’t want every movie to be like this, but are certainly happy with some movies being like this.

Deadspin calls this sequel loads more fun than the original. Time echoes that. iO9 has a confusedTrue Blood fan’s guide to Magic Mike XXL. Mark Hughes calls the film “popcorn fun” in writing on Fortune.

Variety predicts Magic Mike XXL will make around $28 million this weekend. Speaking of numbers, FiveThirtyEight says “come for the pecs, stay for the economics“.
