Recapping Last Weekend

Furious 7 again took the weekend box office in its second weekend of release. The film’s receipts dropped 59.5 percent, which considering its massive debut still meant $59.6 million. It has now brought in $251.5 million domestically and $807.5 million worldwide. Home brought in $18.5 million to push its domestic take to $129 million in three weeks of release. $112.7 million in receipts overseas greatly helps the film’s bottom line considering its $135 million budget. The Longest Ride debuted with $13 million to finish in third place. Get Hard and Cinderella rounded out the top five with $8.2 million and $7.1 million in receipts, respectively.

Ex Machina opened in 4 theaters nationwide last weekend and earned $250,000. It has already been released in the United Kingdom and South Korea, where it has earned $6.2 million. Ex Machina will move into theaters across the country next Friday, April 24th.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2

Kevin James is back to save the world….well actually a casino hotel this time. It’s been a long time since the world has been treated to Paul Blart on the big screen. Paul Blart: Mall Cop debuted with $31.8 million back in 2009 and finished with $146.3 million at the domestic box office.

BoxOffice.com is predicting a $27.5 million opening. It will be enough to top Unfriended‘s projected $20.5 million but not enough to overtake Furious 7‘s projected third weekend take of $32 million.

Unfriended

You’ve heard of the “found footage” format that The Blair Witch Project made popular, well Unfriended uses a “screen capture” format to tell its story. The format didn’t just shape how the movie is viewed as a finished product, but also how it was filmed. LA Weekly calls Unfriendedthe rare movie about the internet that’s actually good“. While cyber bullying is very real and suicides have come from it, this film is not a true story. The people behind the movie did set up fake social media accounts for Laura Barnes, the character in the movie that commits suicide.

True Story

True Story isn’t what you would typically expect from Jonah Hill and James Franco. The movie is based on the true story of Michael Finkel and Christian Longo. Finkel was a New York Times reporter and Longo was the killer who killed his family and then stole Finkel’s identity. True Story is based on Michael Finkel’s book about his life and the whole ordeal.

True Story isn’t playing in a ton of theaters nation-wide, but it is playing on quite a few St. Louis-area screens.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

If it has been awhile since you’ve been to a movie theater then this is the weekend to head out. Keller 8 Cinema welcomes Fifty Shades of Grey, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Run All Night and Kingsman: The Secret Service.  Kingsman is an excellent movie and has earned just shy of $392 worldwide since its release.

Make It A Redbox Night

Among the new movies at Redbox this week are Exodus: Gods and Kings and Maps to the Stars.
