It’s Flower Season So Let’s Start Planting!

It’s that time of year again if you are a flower lover like me. It’s time to hit the local nurseries to pick out the best annuals and perennials to make a backyard oasis.  It’s flower season!

This is by far my favorite time of year. I love planting a gorgeous flower bed full of such vibrant colors. I especially love standing back after all the hard work and looking at the finished masterpiece. The right mixture of flowers and plants make all the difference between a good flower bed and a fabulous flower bed.

You may have a smaller space to work with so instead of a larger flower bed you can create your own patio oasis by planting in pots and raised containers. With the DIY backyard renovation shows and Pinterest, there are so many great ideas to choose from for smaller areas.

Here in St. Louis we are lucky to have so many local nurseries to choose from to help with planting needs. Here are just a few around town.

Sherwood’s Forest

Schmittel’s Nursery

Behlmann Nursery

Plant Haven Farms and Garden Center

Haegele Nursery and Garden Center

Local nurseries will have a larger selection and you will be sure to find what you are looking for.

Annuals or Perennials?

I have found success in planting annuals, which are plants that do not return every season, around Mother’s Day. Planting annuals too early may result in stunted plants or plants may not make it due to late season frosts. The annuals that I have had success with are Petunias, Vinca, and Impatiens. They are easy to take care of and tend to explode with color.

Perennials, which are plants that return every year like Hostas and Daylilies are so easy to plant and easy to take care of. You can plant these at the beginning of the spring season and they tend to be very evasive and will be a great addition to any flower bed.

With Mother’s Day right around the corner I encourage you all to visit your local nurseries and then get out and plant something. I’ll be out and about at my local nursery for sure this weekend. Why not get the entire family involved? It makes it way more fun and less work for you!
