Unfinished Business, Chappie and The Second Best Marigold Hotel open in theaters across the United States this weekend.

Recapping Last Weekend

Focus took the top spot at the box office last weekend with an opening just shy of $18.7 million. Kingsman: The Secret Service was down 35 percent from the previous weekend to $11.88 million. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water finished third in its fourth weekend of release with $10.8 million. Fifty Shades of Grey continued its free fall, dropping $52.6 million to $10.55 million for fourth place while The Lazarus Effect opened with $10.2 million to round out the top five. The Olivia Wilde horror flick was made for just $3.3 million.

While Fifty Shades has dropped sharply at the box office since its opening, it will likely pass $500 million in worldwide sales this weekend. Almost 70 percent of its current $487 million take has been earned in foreign markets. American Sniper brought in another $7.4 million last weekend and now sits at $331 million domestically and $472 million worldwide. Just over 70 percent of its worldwide haul has been earned domestically.

Chappie

Surprisingly enough, this is not an actual Short Circuit remake. Variety says Chappie “winds up feeling as clunky and confused as the childlike droid with which it shares its name”. Sigourney Weaver, who co-stars with Hugh Jackman in Chappie, recently sat down to talk to Jon Stewart about the movie, among other things. Neil Blomkamp directed this robot-driven action film with a budget of around $50 million. Scott Mendelson of Forbes wrote recently that news of Blomkamp, who previously directed District 9 and Elysium, would be directing the next Aliens film may have taken away some thunder from Chappie. Most outlets are predicting this one to win this weekend box office with a total shy of $20 million.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a sequel to 2012’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The original film brought in more than $136 million in theaters worldwide, of which two-thirds came in foreign markets. Stars such as Bill Nighy, Dev Patel and Judi Dench return in the sequel and the film adds Richard Gere. Gere recently told Variety how excited he was to work with this cast and make this movie. Patel, coincidentally enough, is also in Chappie this weekendIf you liked this film the first time around, you’re likely to find your money well spent going to this one. Or if you need a movie to take your grandparents to, take a look at The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel trailer below.

Unfinished Business

You might have seen Vince Vaughn and the rest of the cast of Unfinished Business in the news recently for their excellent stock photo-taking skills. Unfinished Business is a Hangover-esque that involves a business trip rather than a bachelor party. It predictably isn’t getting rave reviews from snooty movie critics, but I will definitely be seeing it and am confident it will make me laugh several times.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

The Wedding Ringer starring Kevin Hart makes its way to the “land of misfit movies” at Keller 8 this weekend. I saw this movie when it first came out and can vouch that it is hilarious.
