Simplifying Life

simplify
New Years Resolution – three simple words that drive me completely crazy. Each year I “resolve” to change several things about myself and don’t actually follow through with any of them. Not because I’m lazy or don’t genuinely want to, but because life gets in my way and I quickly lose sight of them. This year, I’m trying something a little different; rather than resolving to make several small things happen, I am resolving to make one BIG thing happen – and I’m giving myself the opportunity to take baby steps in order to reach my ultimate goal.

Simplify My Life.

I’ll admit it – I am a hoarder. Not a hoarder as in I own 100+ cats or anything, but more like the “I should keep this box because sometime in the next five years, I’ll probably want to wrap a gift in it” kind of hoarder. Nope. I will throw that box away no matter how painful, and next Christmas when I need a box to wrap a gift in, I will deal with it then.

DeathtoStock_Medium5 I’m also guilty of wasting massive amounts of what could be productive time by scrolling through my Facebook news feed on my phone. Waiting at the doctor’s office…sitting at a red light…before I go to sleep at night…when I wake up in the morning…you get the idea. So my first baby step was taking the Facebook app off my phone. It’s been gone now for 7 days and honestly I’ve never felt more free. I knew I was burning brain cells, but I had no idea how much mindless nonsense was going on until it wasn’t there anymore. I still have my account so I don’t worry that I’m missing anything, and I still check it once or twice a day on the computer, but I’m no longer prisoner to that little blue app.

I’d like to take my next baby step around the middle of January – and I think I’m going to take the plunge and de-clutter my kitchen. I’ll go out on a limb and suggest that I likely don’t need half of the gadgets and appliances that are currently housed in my small kitchen space – things that I’ve saved for that day when I decide that I am going to start cooking more. Time to face reality – I’m 33 years and I’m NEVER going to start cooking more. It’s just not who I am. So why not open up that space for something that I will use and appreciate?

Help me out. What other areas of our lives need some TLC? I’d love to hear your suggestions on more baby steps for simplifying my life in February.
