Recapping Last Weekend

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 took the weekend box office for the third weekend in a row, albeit with a paltry $22 million. Overall, the box office brought in just shy of $78 million combined. That number makes it the second lowest-performing weekend of the year. Penguins of Madagascar came in second over the weekend with $10.9 million in its second weekend of released. Horrible Bosses 2 took in $8.4  million and barely beat out Big Hero 6 for third place. Hero, brought in $8.04 million and has now earned $178.3 million in under five weeks of release. Interstellar rounded out the top five with $7.8 million in its fifth weekend.

The Pyramid opened on just 589 screens and brought in just shy of $1.4 million. Wild opened on just 21 screens and brought in $607,000.

Opening This Weekend

Top Five

Here’s the description from IMDb:

“A comedian tries to make it as a serious actor when his reality-TV star fiancée talks him into broadcasting their wedding on her TV show.”

Chris Rock is that comedian and Rosario Dawson plays his love interest, who is not the woman he is about to marry. Judging by just the cast names on paper, this may be the funniest movie ever. Along with Rock, Top Five also features Adam Sandler, Kevin Hart, Whoopi Goldberg, Jerry Seinfeld, Tracy Morgan and Cedric the Entertainer among others. Rock also wrote and directed Top Five, which is getting great reviews. The first anyone really saw of this movie was at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Paramount eventually won distribution rights. While Rock got a bunch of great actor and actress friends to be in the movie, Eddie Murphy was the one person who didn’t take Rock up on the offer to be in the movie.

Chris Rock stopped by MX Movies in downtown St. Louis yesterday to talk about the film and treat some lucky folks to a special showing. Top Five opens tonight at MX Movies and in theaters across town on Friday.

Prediction: Top Five is only opening in 975 theaters this weekend, so the box office receipts are projected to be around $10 million.

Exodus: Gods and Kings

Christian Bale stars in and Ridley Scott directs this “Biblical Epic”. Groups that get pissed about these sorts of things on both sides are upset about various aspects of this movie.

Prediction: $29 Million
