Recapping Last Weekend

The Maze Runner took the weekend with $32.5 million, falling $1.5 million short of making back its budget in its first weekend. A Walk Among the Tombstones came in second the $12.8 million and This is Where I Leave You was right on its heels with $11.6 million in receipts. No Good Deed fell almost 60 percent in its second weekend, falling just short of $10 million. Dolphin Tale 2 fell 44 percent to $8.9 million for fifth place.

Guardians of the Galaxy, in its eighth weekend of release, earned $5 million to pass the $310 million mark domestically.

Opening This Weekend

The Equalizer

Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua worked together on Training Day and reunite for The Equalizer. Will Leitch over at Deadspin enjoyed it. Case closed, go see it.

Screen Rant is predicting a $38 million opening.

See The Equalizer tonight at MX Movies at 8 pm before it opens across the country tomorrow.

The Boxtrolls

This is the latest stop-motion flick from Laika, which has previously come out with Coraline and ParaNorman. Reviews from around the web liked The BoxTrolls for its charm and “all things cheesy”. These five things about it are pretty cool too.

The Boxtrolls has already earned $11 million overseas. BoxOffice.com is predicting a $14 million opening here in the States.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Keller 8 Cinema welcomes Lucy, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For  and The Giver this weekend. Lucy is by far the biggest box office success of the trio, earning $378 million worldwide in its theater run thus far. Sin City has been a dud with just $13.7 million in five weeks of release. The Giver has made $43 million in six weeks on a $25 million budget.

Make It A Redbox Night

Blended comes to Redbox this week. I saw the Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler comedy last night and it’s a good time. It’s definitely worth the $1.20. Is it the best movie of the year? Is it largely predictable? Are there lots of laughs? All yes.
