Weekend Movie Gide: Expendables 3, The Giver, Let's Be Cops

Three movies open in wide release this weekend. Slyvester Stallone returns with his band of merry men and adds Ronda Rousey in The Expendables 3.  Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. team up for the comedy Let’s Be Cops and The Giver comes to the big screen.

Recapping Last Weekend

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -$65.575 million 2. Guardians of the Galaxy – $42.1 million 3. Into The Storm – $17.3million 4. The Hundred-Foot Journey $11 million 5. Lucy $9.5 million

From Box Office Mojo

Step Up All In, although a very enjoyable experience, only manager to bring in just under $6.5 million over the weekend. Guardians has done quite well overseas, earning 41.5% of their $330 million worldwide take in foreign markets.

Opening This Weekend

The Expendables 3

The Expendables 3 has the names to put butts in seats. Apparently it doesn’t really have the plot worthy of its cast. The Expendables 2 opened with a $28.6 million weekend back in 2012. Despite adding Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson and Ronda Rousey, this third installment is only projected to bring in $23 million this weekend.

Let’s Be Cops

Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. both star on New Girl, but don’t expect this movie to be nearly as funny as the Fox comedy. The movie has scored terrible with critics on Rotten Tomatoes and really the audience scores aren’t that great either. One projection has Let’s Be Cops coming in at $21 million for its opening weekend. Look for this one to come in third or fourth this weekend.

The Giver

This film adaptation of the 1993 novel by the same name stars Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes and Jeff Bridges. Taylor Swift also had a “glorified cameo” in the film. Despite the liberties the film takes in terms of following the books, don’t expect Hunger Games.  Reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes are not very good, but lots of people want to see it. Cameron Monaghan plays Asher, the best friend of male lead Jonas ( Brenton Thwaites ).  Monaghan plays Ian Gallagher in Shameless.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Keller 8 Cinema welcomes Dinesh D’Souza’s America: Imagine the World Without HerHercules, and And So It Goes. Diane Keaton and Michael Douglas star in And So It Goes along with youngster Sterling Jerins.

Make It A Redbox Night

Redbox welcomes Rio 2, Transcendence and Muppets Most Wanted this week. Nicholas Cage also stars in Rage, which is a straight to dvd release. Not many sane people would spend the money to watch a Nic Cage movie in theaters, but for $1.20 it may be worth it. cage and Danny Glover work to find Cage’s daughter after she’s kidnapped. Rachel Nichols plays the daughter. She has had roles in Alex Cross, Conan the Barbarian, Criminal Minds and Alias among others.
