Zac Efron on Running Wild With Bear Grylls tonight

Zac Efron will be among six celebrities appearing this season on Running Wild With Bear Grylls. The series premieres tonight at 7 pm on NBC with Efron. Pi heading to Miami

The uber-successful local pizzeria Pi will be opening a location in Miami, according to St. Louis Magazine‘s George Mahe. Pi’ami will be the 8th location for the chain’s owners Chris Sommers and Frank Uible. In six years the chain has grown from one location in St. Louis to four full-service locations in St. Louis, a carry-out location in Chesterfield, a food truck, a Washington, D.C. location and a new location set to open soon in Cincinnati. Pi will have a friend on the restaurant beat off the bat in Miami. Evan S. Been, formerly of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch took his talents to the Miami Herald last year.

Cardinals sign Pierzynski; take 2 in Chicago

The St. Louis Cardinals signed catcher A.J. Pierzynski over the weekend and he joined them in Chicago. Pierzynski had 3 hits and an RBI in his debut Saturday, a 6-3 Cardinals win. He then went 1-4 on Sunday with a double in a 1-0 Cardinals win. Pierzynski previously played this season with the Boston Red Sox before he was cut from the team a few weeks ago. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny talked extensively with the catcher before the team signed him. Wainwright went 7 innings with A.J. behind the plate, giving up 5 hits and earning his MLB-leading 13th win of the season. Trevor Rosenthal picked up his MLB-leading 32nd save on Sunday.  The Cardinals trail the Milwaukee Brewers by 2 games in the National League Central and are a half game back in the Wild Card race.

Tony La Russa, Bobby Cox, Joe Torre, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and Frank Thomas enter Hall of Fame

Former Cardinals managers Tony La Russa and Joe Torre were among those to enter Cooperstown over the weekend. The hulking Frank Thomas gave an emotional speech where he thanked his mother. Greg Maddux made a fart joke during his speech. Tony La Russa caught some fire by saying that players like Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds, those suspected of steroid use, should be allowed into the Hall of Fame with asterisks attached to their names.

The Simpsons and Family Guy doing crossover episode

The episode has received some negative feedback from fans. A trailer for the crossover episode was released over the weekend at Comic-Con in San Diego


 

Lucy wins weekend box office

Scarlett Johansson’s thriller debuted to $44 million over the weekend. Hercules, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, opened to $29 million to finish second. Both the debuts beat expectations.  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes finished third in its third weekend of release with $16.4 million. It has now earned more than its $170 million budget domestically. It has brought in $182 million overseas. Transformers: Age of Extinction, out for just over 4 weeks, is closing in on $1 billion in receipts worldwide. Over $300 million of that has come from China. We’ll have a more detailed look at the numbers from the weekend on Thursday in our Weekend Movie Guide. We’ll also take a look at this week’s new releases; Guardians of the Galaxy and Get on Up.

 Jeff Gordon wins #5 at Brickyard 400

Jeff Gordon won the Crown Royal Presents the John Wayne Walding 400 at Idianapolis Motor Speedway yesterday for the fifth time. It was Gordon’s 90th career victory and tied him with Michael Schumacher for the most wins ever at the track.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch endorses Steve Stenger over Charlie Dooley

Charlie Dooley has been the county executive office in St. Louis County since 2003. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has endorsed him in three previous elections. It has endorsed Steve Stenger over Dooley in the Democratic primary this year. The editorial board says Dooley “has squandered the trust the voters placed in him in 2003”.

“Our Leader the Mockingjay” trailer released

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will be released on November 21 of this year. This latest teaser was released over the weekend at Comic-Con. The teaser is the first for the new movie to feature Jennifer Lawernce’s character, Katniss.


 

Immigration surge continues

The surge of immigrants from Central America crossing into the United States continues as Scott Brown of New Hampshire recently became the first U.S. Senate candidate to air an ad on television about the crisis. reports have surfaced of gangs attempting to recruit the unaccompanied minors crossing the border into their ranks. President Obama’s administration is rumored to be looking at executive action that would allow as many as 5 million without legal authorization to stay in the U.S. to stay.

North Korea threatens nuclear strike on White House

The threat came from the country’s director of the General Political Bureau during a Sunday military rally. Most military experts don’t believe the country has the capability to back the threat.

Shawn Mendes uses social media to hit #1 on iTunes in just 37 minutes

The 15-year-old Canadian has a rabid army of social media followers. He released his debut EP last night to great fanfare. Here’s the lyric video for his debut single, “Life Of The Party”.
