This weekend Tom Cruise returns to the big screen with the big-budget Sci-Fi action flick Edge of Tomorrow and Shailene Woodley stars in the young-adult love story The Fault in Our Stars. Catch Captain America: The Winter Soldier in theaters while you can and see what is available to rent at Redbox. We’ve got it all here in our Weekend Movie Guide.

Recapping Last Weekend

Angelina Jolie’s first live-action turn on the big screen since 2010 ran away with the weekend box office. Maleficent pulled in $69.4 million in its opening weekend. X-Men: Days of Future Past came in second with $32.5 million in its second weekend. The newest X-Men blockbuster has already brought in over $500 million worldwide. A Million Ways to Die in the West came in third in its opening weekend with $16.8 million. Godzilla came in fourth with $12 million in its third weekend of release. It has now topped its $160 million budget domestically with $174.4 million stateside. 53% of its total take has come internationally for a total just shy of $377 million worldwide as of now. Blended rounded out the top five over the weekend with $8.144 million in its second weekend, a 43% drop. Neighbors finished just behind at $8.08 million in its fourth weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the May box office was the lowest its has been since 2010. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla and X-Men all opened to $90 million or more, but each fell off sharply in subsequent weeks.

Opening This Weekend

Edge of Tomorrow

Mark Hughes said on Forbes that this is some of Tom Cruise’s best sci-fi work. He was surprised how appealing the storyline was and was very impressed with the visual effects. Those visual effects and people seeing the movie on IMAX screens will inflate the film’s opening numbers. Projections call for an opening weekend just shy of $30 million  for this one. Considering reports of a $178 million budget, Disney should probably go ahead and right this one off as a loss. You can see Edge of Tomorrow tonight at MX Movies at 8 pm.

The Fault in Our Stars

You’ll want to bring tissues if you’re going to see this big screen take on John Green’s best-selling book. People who predict these sorts of things have this one winning the box office this weekend with a total close to $40 million.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Keller 8 Cinema in South County welcomes Divergent, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Mom’s Night Out to its lineup this weekend. Divergent stars Shailene Woodley, who also stars in The Fault In Our Stars. If you haven’t seen the newest Captain America in theaters yet, I suggest you take this opportunity to do so. Thunderstorms are a real possibility this weekend around St. Louis, so this would be a good plan to have in your back pocket.

Make It A Redbox Night

Not too much at the ol’ magical DVD box this weekend. I have been binge-watching Veronica Mars lately. I’m not quite done so I won’t be seeing this this weekend, but the Kickstarter-funded Veronica Mars movie is at Redbox this weekend. The series and the movie of course star Kristen Bell, who is fresh off her role as the voice of Princess Anna in Frozen. She also hosted the CMT Music Awards last night and drew rave reviews.
