Weekend Movie Guide: Godzilla, Million Dollar Arm

Two highly-anticipated movies make their big screen debuts this weekend. The big-budget Godzilla and the Disney-backed true story Million Dollar Arm. Also, see what’s showing at Keller 8 in South County and what’s available at your local Redbox.

Recapping Last Weekend

Seth Rogen and Zac Efron scored one of the biggest debuts ever for an R-rated comedy, but Neighbors fell just shy of $50 million when all of the numbers were in. The $51 million from early in the week was recalculated to only $49 million. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell 61% from its opening weekend to take second place with $35.5 million. It has now made $151 million domestically and over $400 million overseasThe Other Woman has been a box office success with $9.6 million in receipts in its third weekend and almost $64 million overall versus a $40 budget. Heaven is for Real took in an additional $7.5 million in its fourth weekend. It’s been a massive success with almost $80 million in receipts on a $12 million budget. Captain America: The Winter Soldier rounded out the top five with $5.75 million.

Mom’s Night Out was a dud in its opening weekend with$4.3 million in receipts. Then again its budget was only $5 million. Something called Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return finished just behind it with $3.75 million. Oz is an animated musical starring the voices of Lea Michele, Kelsey Grammar and Dan Aykroyd.

Opening This Weekend

Godzilla

Big monster wreaks havoc. It’s the Japanese story that has been told many times over. USA Today gave the newest creation three stars out of four. Forbes loved the special effects.

You can see sneak peeks of Godzilla tonight at MX Movies in your standard viewing medium or 3D.

Million Dollar Arm

Jon Hamm stars as sports agent J.B. Bernstein. Bernstein  traveled to India in 2077 with the crazy idea of finding a cricket pitcher that he could turn into a professional baseball pitcher. Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel were the products of the reality show Million Dollar Arm. The Huffington Post called this Disney production “corny but fun”. Salon thinks this movie is a big step down the slope for the sports movie genre. The Times of India called it “a gentle watch”.

You can also catch a sneak peek of Million Dollar Arm tonight at MX Movies.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Our favorite second-chance theater, Keller 8 Cinema in South County, will be bringing in Brick Mansions and Oculus this weekend. Mansions was one of the last films completed by the late Paul Walker.

Ryan

Ryan is a weird dude. He doesn't cook, yet owns a plethora of kitchen gadgets. He rationalized buying a SodaStream while unemployed. He counts Step Up 2: The Streets as one of his favorite movies along with Footloose, Rent, Grease and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. He loves Mizzou but only wants them in the SEC so he can tailgate in Nashville. He owns a ShakeWeight and AbLounger, but still loves him some John Donut and Billie's Fine Foods. You can get more of Ryan at iLoveSoulard.com or just check the stool on the far end of the bar at iTap in Soulard.
