Recapping Last Weekend

Divergent, based on the young adult novels, topped the weekend box office with $54.6 million and proved to be a solid start for the studio’s franchise plans. Muppets Most Wanted finished second with a $17 million opening weekend and Mr. Peabody & Sherman brought in $11.8 million in its third weekend. 300: Rise of an Empire came in fifth with $8.5 million in its third weekend. The Christian-themed God’s Not Dead opened to a very surprising $9.2 million to put it in fourth place. The film was only shown on 780 screens around the country. It brought in almost $12,000 per screen whereas Muppets averaged just over $5,000 per screen.

Opening This Weekend

Noah

Darren Aronofsky, who previously directed Black Swan, has been fascinated with the biblical story of Noah since he was a child. This is his “passion project” that he got to write and direct. Glenn Beck is among those who have reacted harshly to the film. Others are saying that it opens up a lot of education possibilities. The film also stars Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Hopkins.

Sabotage

It’s just Arnold being Arnold in this one. Stephen Whitty of The Star-Ledger thought this was one of the best films Schwarzenegger has done in a long time. Joe Manganiello of True Blood fame is in the film sporting a little different look. Josh Holloway (Sawyer from Lost), Sam Worthington and Terrence Howard are also among the quality cast surrounding Arnold.

Cesar Chavez

Diego Luna directed this movie about Cesar Chavez and his importance to the Mexican-American laborers. The film received the Audience Award at the recent SXSW festival. This is Luna’s first English-language film behind the camera. The actor was most recently in Elysium. Michael Pena, American Ferrera, Rosario Dawson and John Malkovich star in Chavez.

Bad Words

Jason Bateman plays the villain in Bad Words and directs. By “villain”, we mean a 40-year old man who finds a loophole in the rules of a spelling bee competition that allows him to attempt to crush the souls of the middle schoolers the contest is full of. The Toronto Sun says Family Guy fans wll love Jason Bateman’s latest”. The San Francisco Chronicle also is a fan of Bateman’s work on this one.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

The “land of misft movies”  welcomes four new movies tomorrow.  Keller 8 will being showing The Monuments Men, American Hustle, Her and Frozen this weekend.

Make It A Redbox Night

Frozen is also available at Redbox this week. It’s joined by Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street, Delivery Man and Saving Mr. Banks. Gravity originally came out in October of last year so, if you have been itching to see this, you may want to run to your local magical video machine.
