Kit Harrington of Game of Thrones fame attempts to save the woman he loves while Mount Vesuvius erupts in Pompeii. Kevin Costner works to hunt down an international spy in 3 Days To Kill. Look for The Lego Movie to take the top spot for the third weekend in a row.

Recapping Last Weekend

The Lego Movie took the top spot at the box office with close to $50 million in ticket sales. Ticket sales only dropped 27.8% from its opening weekend. The animated film has now brought in $130 million domestically in two weeks and $200 million worldwide. The film has received rave reviews from audiences. The Guardian called it a great commercial rather than a great film. About Last Night opened to the tune of $25.6 million, which dwarfed it’s $12.5 budget. The RobocCop reboot opened with $21.7 million against a $100 million budget. The overseas markets came out to see RoboCop to the tune of $70 million pushing the film’s total gross over its budget. The Monuments Men brought in $15.5 million in its second weekend and Endless Love rounded out the top five with $13.3 million in its opening weekend.

Winter’s Tale opened with a dismal $7.3 million. It has a long way to go to make back its $60 million budget. Frozen brought in $6.2 million to inch ever closer to the $1 billion mark worldwide. It now stands at $958 million. In its second weekend, Vampire Academy brought in a dismal $714 per theater and under $2 million overall.

Opening This Weekend

Pompeii

Kit Harrington plays a “slave turned gladiator” who must save the woman of his desire from a Roman Senator….while a volcano is erupting. Kiefer Sutherland plays the villainous Senator. Some critics are interestingly comparing it to Titanic.

3 Days To Kill

The New York Daily News called this Costner flick “dreadful“.  Johnny Depp’s fiance, Amber Heard, also stars in the film. Costner talked highly of sharing the screen with Hailee Steinfeld. Steinfeld may be better known currently for being besties with Taylor Swift.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Keller 8 welcomes The Nut Job and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit to their newly revamped screens this weekend. Today is your last day to catch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Grudge Match and Anchorman 2 in theaters. The Keller folks teased on their Facebook page that an R-rated version of Anchorman 2 will be released to them soon. If you haven’t seen award favorites like Nebraska, Dallas Buyer’s Club and Captain Phillips yet, those are still playing in South County. Time is running out to catch The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on the big screen.

Make It A Redbox Night

It’s a slow week of new releases in the land of $1.20 movies. Machete Kills bring its ridiculousness. Anna Nicole is not nearly as sexy as its subject. Many of the newer releases are getting pretty poor reviews on Redbox. One exception is Riddick with Dwayne Johnson. It’s getting slightly better reviews and currently scores 3 stars out of 4.

Ryan

Ryan is a weird dude. He doesn't cook, yet owns a plethora of kitchen gadgets. He rationalized buying a SodaStream while unemployed. He counts Step Up 2: The Streets as one of his favorite movies along with Footloose, Rent, Grease and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. He loves Mizzou but only wants them in the SEC so he can tailgate in Nashville. He owns a ShakeWeight and AbLounger, but still loves him some John Donut and Billie's Fine Foods. You can get more of Ryan at iLoveSoulard.com or just check the stool on the far end of the bar at iTap in Soulard.
