The Monday Roundup for January 14, 2014

Golden Globes

Matthew McConaughey took home an award for his role in Dallas Buyer’s Club. American Hustle won its category. Andy Samberg and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were also surprising award recipients. Oh, yeah there was lots of water too. Jennifer Lawrence’s dress was interesting and sparked some creativity across the internet.

Lone Survivor Tops the Box Office

Lone Survivor, the Navy SEAL movie starring Mark Wahlberg based on Marcus Luttrell’s 2007 book, ran away with the top spot at the box office over the weekend. A robust marketing campaign and rave reviews led to an estimated weekend box office take of $38.5 million. It’s the largest January opening since Cloverfield brought in $40 million in 2008. Frozen finished second with another $15 million to push it well over $300 million domestically. The Wolf of Wall Street picked up $9 million to take the third spot. We’ll have a more detailed look at the numbers on Thursday in our Weekend Movie Guide.

Baby Girl Meets Daddy’s Twin

Chewbacca Wins Twitter

Peter Mayhew played Chewbacca in the original Star Wars movie. He’s on Twitter with the awesome handle of TheWookieeRoars. On Thursday night he decided to tweet out a bunch of pictures he had from the set of the first film. Some of these photos had been seen before and others hadn’t. You should take a look at them. Alyssa Milano is a fan of his feed so you should be too.

Magic Smartphones Are Here and More From CES

The annual technology showcase happened last week in Las Vegas. Lots of cool things were announced or unveiled, like this magic cellular telephone. There was also the announcement of the WWE network and the unveiling of the Pebble Steel. Check out this Best of CES post.

Target Was Off By 30 Million+

Target announced that when they said the data of some 40 million people had been compromised, they were actually a wee bit off. Apparently the numbers is actually 70 million or more. Neiman Marcus also had their data breached in the same manner during the holiday shopping season and there are rumors of three other companies that have yet to announce the breach on their data.

Colorado Mile Marker Reads 419.99

Souvenir hunters, thieves as some would call them, kept helping themselves to the 20 mile marker. So Colorado decided to put a mile marker sign up that instead reads 419.99.

Seahawks, 49ers, Patriots and Broncos Advance

The NFL playoff game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New Orleans Saints was turning into a real barn-burner in the closing minutes. Things looked like the Saints were out of it, but they scored a late touchdown and then recovered an onside kick. Marques Colston caught a pass from Drew Brees with two seconds left and then instead of stepping out of bounds, he did this. In case you don’t know the rules of football, that’s not legal. LaGarrette Blount ran for 166 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Patriots to next weekend. He’s come a long way since this. The Seahawks are tough to beat at home and they are already taking precautions to make sure their stadium isn’t invaded by too many 49ers fans on Sunday.

ESPN Announces 30 for 30: Soccer Stories

ESPN’s 30 for 30 series is pretty awesome. To promote this summer’s World Cup, they will premiere this series in April featuring a mix of productions telling stories of the most popular spot in the world.

A-Rod Now Suspended 162 Games

Alex Rodriquez and Major League Baseball are likely heading to federal court. Bud Selig of course originally wanted to suspend A-Rod for 211 games for his involvement with Biogenesis. A-Rod appealed and now a three-person review panel ruled that he should be suspended for 162 games instead. The courts should really have fun with this one considering that MLB is just making up numbers when determining the suspension length and was incredibly shady in investigating the whole think in the first place.

Ariel Sharon Finally Dies

Dude spent eight years in a permanent vegetative state.

Marriages

Pamela Anderson remarried Rick Salomon, who is referred  to as a “film producer”. Salomon gives that profession as much of a bad name as he gives marriage. Surely Anderson realizes that one of Salomon’s producer credits is for his sex tape with Paris Hilton and another is for a film starring rappers Lil Wayne and Big Boi. Her haircut also looks terrible and I just want to bang my head against a wall after writing this.

Bobbi Kristina Brown married Nick Gordon over the weekend. Bobbi is the daughter of the late Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. Gordon is her adopted brother. Gordon was never officially adopted by Houston so it was more like Whitney brought the kid into her house to raise and eventually marry her daughter. There are conflicting reports as to whether Grandma approves or not.

Splits

Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie are splitting up after three and a half years of marriage. While Lizzie McGuire is worth a good amount of money herself, Comrie’s family is apparently worth about $500 million. Don’t worry, they are still friends and will be raising Luca together.
