Charlie Worsham will be on Fox’s hit show Bones this Friday night, but on Thursday night he will be in St. Louis playing Off Broadway. The Mississippi-born country musician is touring in support of his debut album, Rubberband. Matt Stell will be opening the show. Tickets are $14 at the door.

Worsham’s debut studio album was one of the most well-regarded country albums of 2013 among critics and Amazon shoppers alike. The extremely talented instrumentalist has been compared to Keith Urban. Vince Gill and Marty Stuart make an appearance on his debut, two of his idols. His first single, “Could It Be”, peaked at #32 on Billboard’s Hot Country chart. Worsham co-wrote the tune.

 

Worsham isn’t an overnight success by any means. He has been a fixture in Nashville bars for seven years, playing to make a living. Charlie actually first played on the Grand Ole Opry stage at the age of 12 after winning a Junior National Banjo competition.

While Charlie has been toiling in the Nashville bars playing his tunes, he has developed a solid following nationally with his deft use of social media. He ran a contest through his Twitter page where he asked his followers to suggest a song for him to cover. He then had 24 hours to plan out and record his own version of the song, where he also had to play an instrument used in the recording himself. He covered songs such as “Eastbound and Down” by Jerry Reed,“I Want Candy” by The Strangeloves and ‘Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne. He also covered of “Roar” by Katy Perry and this cover of “Gangnam Style” by Psy.

Worsham is a favorite on the nationally-syndicated Bobby Bones show. He has performed his own songs as well as this Beatles mashup. St. Louis folks may remember him from the Autocenters Nissan Float Trip sponsored by 93.7 The Bull.

Charlie Worsham’s newest single, “Want Me To”, was released to country radio stations in December.

Matt Stell will be opening at Off Broadway. In the bio on his website, Stell says describes his sound as “country-rock music that is born from the blues, soul, and the singer-songwriter perspective, and it has a Southern accent to it”. He may be the most overly-qualified musician academically to grace the stage at 3509 Lemp Avenue. Stell graduated with a  B.A with Honors in Philosophy and Religion from Drury University, where he also played basketball. He then went on to earn a Master’s in Communication from the University of Arkansas. In 2012, he opened for Josh Turner at the arena on the Drury campus. He also played an event on campus back in July honoring their recent NCAA-II National Championship team.

Stell puts on a well-received high energy show with a mix of originals and covers.
