Weekend Movie Guide

A crowded field at the box office adds only one film this weekend. Chris Hemsworth returns as the title character in Thor: The Dark World. Hemsworth reprises the role he played in 2011’s Thor and in 2012’s The Avengers. The sequel will try to become the third different movie in as many weekends to top the box office after Gravity did it the previous three consecutive weekends. Here’s your Weekend Movie Guide.

Ender’s Game brought in $27 million in it’s opening weekend last weekend to take the top spot. It’s current take stands at $40 million; a long way from making back its $110 million budget. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa took a 38% fall week-over-week but that still meant a $20 million weekend for the film that cost $15 million to make. It has now brought in over $61 million in two weeks. Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline came in third with Last Vegas and Free Birds came in fourth; both in the $15-16 million range. Gravity dropped 36% from the previous weekend but still took in $12.8 million in its fifth weekend of release.  It has currently taken in $221 million at the domestic office and another $208 million overseas to easily make a profit on its $100 million budget.

Thor: The Dark World

Natalie Portman plays Hemsworth’s love interest Jane Foster and Tom Hiddleston plays Loki in this sequel. Hiddleston is receiving great reviews for his performance. The original film pulled in $65 million in its opening weekend on its way to $181 million at the domestic box office and $268 million at the foreign box office. Since the original’s premiere, The Avengers opened to an absurd $207 million in the first weekend of May 2012. This film will benefit from the appearance of Hemsworth’s character in that Marvel film. The Dark World was released overseas last week and has already pulled in $100 million worldwide. Prediction sites say that it will easily dwarf the numbers of the other films out this weekend and could top $75 million.  See it tonight at MX Movies in 3-D.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Two movies that we’ve talked about before make their way to the “land of misfit movies” this weekend at Keller Plaza Cine 8. Escape Plan with Arnold Shwarzenegger and Slyvester Stallone and Runner Runner starring Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck are both well worth the $3 admission fee on the second-run circuit. Check out the showtimes.

Make It A Redbox Night

White House Down and Grown Ups 2 bring a lot of star power to the dvd market this week. If you have the time to kick back and relax, I suggest renting both of these films this weekend. If you only have time for one it really depends on your mood. Do you want to laugh? Are you a fan of Billy Madison? Pick up Grown Ups 2. Do you want to see stuff blown up? Do you or your movie-watching partner have a crush on Channing Tatum? Pick up White House Down. I caught President Jamie Foxx on the big screen and it was a very enjoyable experience.
