Ender’s Game, Last Vegas and Free Birds hit theaters this weekend

A film 28 years in the making finally arrives on the big screen this weekend along with a 281-year old quartet and time-traveling turkeys. With the arrival of Ender’s Game, Last Vegas and Free Birds, moviegoers will have plenty of options at the box office. Here’s your Weekend Movie Guide from RealLifeSTL.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa stole the top spot last weekend away from Gravity by raking in $32 million. It was the biggest non-3-D opening for a Jackass film. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney still came in at #2 with a $20.1 million take.  Gravity has since gone over the $203 million mark during its theater run. Captain Phillips brought in $11.6 million to push its overall take to $70 million on a $55 million budget.

Ender’s Game

Considering folks have been trying to bring the science fiction novel to the big screen since it was published in 1985, the fact that this movie is finally debuting is crazy. It’s almost as crazy as Orson Scott Card, the author of Ender’s Game. No, that’s not accurate. Orson Scott Card is out of his mind. Cracked even did an post entirely about how crazy he is. Director Gavin Hood has unfairly been forced to answer questions about the lunatic author. Take a look at the trailer and decide for yourself if Ender’s Game is something you want to see. See it tonight at MX Movies.

Last Vegas

A new wolfpack invades Las Vegas in this Jon Turteltaub film. Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline are a combined 281 years old. Most of them had their first roles before the International Hotel, the first “mega-resort”, opened in Vegas. On Rotten Tomatoes, Last Vegas gets a dismal 42% rating on the “Tomatometer” from critics, but 94% of the audience wants to see it. ShowBuzzDaily is predicting a $14.5 million opening weekend. Boxoffice is higher on the film, predicting a $19 million weekend.

Free Birds

Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler lend their voices to this animated film about two turkeys who travel back in time to stop the whole turkey at Thanksgiving dinner thing. USA Today calls it “pleasant enough holiday fare”. If you’re looking for a film that will occupy the kids for a bit and maybe give you a laugh or two, this is it.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

Ron Howard’s Rush races into “the land of misfit movies” this weekend. Starring Chris Hemsworth and Olivia Wilde, the film only made $26 million at the domestic box office but has pulled in $47.5 million overseas, easily making back its $38 million budget. We wrote about Rush when it opened just last month. This one is definitely worth seeing on the big screen. Check out what else is playing this weekend at Keller Plaza Cine 8.

Make It A Redbox Night

If you’re looking for a family friendly choice to watch at home, pick up The Croods. You probably won’t believe this, but critics actually liked this knowing Nicolas Cage lends his talents to it. Emma Stone and Cloris Leachman also lend their voices to the prehistoric animated film. Leachman is hilarious as Maw Maw in Raising Hope, which should convince you to rent this by itself.

Ryan is a weird dude. He doesn't cook, yet owns a plethora of kitchen gadgets. He rationalized buying a SodaStream while unemployed. He counts Step Up 2: The Streets as one of his favorite movies along with Footloose, Rent, Grease and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. He loves Mizzou but only wants them in the SEC so he can tailgate in Nashville. He owns a ShakeWeight and AbLounger, but still loves him some John Donut and Billie's Fine Foods.
