A low budget star-filled film and a film sure to get big laughs open at the box office this weekend to try and stop Gravity‘s three-week reign at number 1. Here’s your Weekend Movie Guide.

The Counselor, starring Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz, is the latest from Director Ridley Scott. Bad Grandpa features Johnny Knoxville playing an eighty-six-year-old on a roadtrip with his eight-year-old grandson.

Last weekend at the box office Gravity saw its take drop 30.5% but with its astronomic numbers in its opening weekends that still meant a #1 spot with just over $30 million. The $100 million film starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney has now taken in almost $175 million domestically and over $114 million overseas for a worldwide sales of $289 million in 19 days in theaters. It is also generating quite a bit of awards buzz. The three opening movies we profiled last week, Carrie, Escape Plan and The Fifth Estate finished 3,4 and 8 respectively at the box office. Carrie brought in $16 million. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Slyvester Stallone drew in just under $10 million and The Fifth Estate pulled in a paltry $946 per screen for a $1.7 million opening.  Captain Phillips had a so-so second weekend with $16.4 million and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 drew closer to a $100 million box office run with a $9.6 million dollar fourth weekend.

The Counselor

Scott and Pitt team up again 22 years after Thelma & Louise. The screenplay for The Counselor was written by Cormac McCarthy, who wrote No Country For Old Men. The difference between No Country, which won four Oscars in 2007 and this film is that while No Country was based on the McCarthy book, the screenplay was written by Joel and Ethan Coen. Critics have not been impressed at the way McCarthy’s screenplay translates onto the screen. Considering Scott’s films have brought in an average of $100 million each when ticket prices are adjusted for inflation, it’s safe to say that Ridley knows what he’s doing. That not reason enough? Scott was the Executive Producer of Numb3rs, which ran for six seasons and 116 episodes despite being about a mathematician doing math to help the FBi solve crime. Ridley obviously knows a thing or two.  Catch it before the rush with a 10 pm showing tonight at MX Movies downtown.

Bad Grandpa

Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa sees the return of Irving Zisman, the grandpa character seen in several Jackass bits. Makeup to turn Knoxville into the eighty-six-year-old took almost three hours to apply each time. Nine-year old Jackson Nicoll is being credited with being an excellent co-star to Knoxville and quite hilarious. Nicoll got his first big role at the age of six in The Fighter. Bad Grandpa also stars Georgina Cates, whose real name is Clare Woodgate. Woodgate apparently was originally turned down for a role in An Awfully Big Adventure back in 1995 but then reinvented herself as Georgina Cates with a new appearance and went back to win the role. Don’t go see this film if you are easily offended. Considering the Jackass films have brought in a combined $253 million, including a $50 million opening weekend for Jackass 3-D in 2010, it’s safe to say there are enough people out there with a sense of humor who will flock to see this movie.

Catch It While You Can

If you’ve been meaning to see We’re The Millers, Don Jon or The Family, now is your chance. All three are coming to Keller this weekend. Family flicks Planes and Despicable Me: 2 as well as more adult films The Heat and The Conjuring are also available to see on the cheap this weekend. Our pick?

Make It A Redbox Night

This Is The End is a surefire good bet for your $1.20 if you haven’t seen it already. With the cold moving in this weekend, you may need more movies to see this weekend curled up on your couch. Check out Only God Forgives with Ryan Gosling. Despite staring Gosling, you may not have heard on this one. Its widest release was in 81 theaters during its run. It racked up $780,000 domestically and almost $10 million overseas.  From the description of this film, it seems like this isn’t the film to see if you want to root for the good guy because it has none. It’s definitely a sleeper pick to watch.
