Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks are proven box office money makers. Their films have brought in over $6 billion dollars combined at the box office.  The pair will add to that total this weekend as Gravity is expected to bring in another $35 million and Captain Phillips is expected to come in around $20 million.

Gravity, starring Bullock and George Clooney, had an outstanding weekend in its debut last weekend. The film brought in $55 million thanks to rave critic reviews, strong word-of-mouth and pricey 3-D and IMAX ticket sales. It is garnering buzz and an Oscar contender. Overall the box office saw a 17% increase from the weekend before, with $126.5 million in tickets sold. Gravity and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: 2 ($21 million) accounted for 60% of ticket sales for the weekend. Runner Runner, with Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck, and Prisoners were the only other movies to take in more than $5 million with $7.7 and $5.7 million respectively.

On to movies opening this weekend.

Captain Phillips

Unlike in The Butlerthis film at least sticks enough with the true story to keep the name of the main character in tact. The real-life Captain Richard Phillips was taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2009 aboard the Maersk Alabama cargo ship. When pirates took control of the boat, he offered himself as a hostage to keep his crew safely aboard the boat. Navy Seal snipers eventually saved  the Captain’s life with authorization from President Obama.

Machete Kills

Danny Trejo returns as Machete in the second movie in the planned Machete trilogy. Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, Michelle Rodriguez, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Vanessa Hudgens also appear in the film. The first Machete brought in $26.5 million in 2010 on its $10.5 million budget.  Forbes reports that this second film had a budget of $20 million. They aren’t exactly high on this film’s chances.

Need a romantic comedy to see this weekend? Here you go.

Catch It Before It’s Gone

The lineup at our favorite $3 movie theater is mostly the same this weekend as it was last weekend. Still plenty of quality bets though. If you need something to occupy your kids for a few hours this weekend Monsters University, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Despicable Me 2 and The Smurfs 2 are all available options. If you want the big-budget film experience, check out Elysium. if you want to laugh we point you to Grown Ups 2 or The Heat. If you haven’t seen The Way, Way Back yet, see that this weekend. The one new movie at Keller Plaza Cine 8 this weekend is The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

Make It A Redbox Night

After Earth starring Will and Jaden Smith and directed by M. Night Shyamalan hit the network of red boxes this week. Episodes 7-13 of House of Cards are also available in what is most likely the value pick for $1.20. If you are either close to turning to turning 30 or recently turned 30 like myself, pick up The Lifeguard with Kristen Bell and hopefully you will take solace in the fact that you are reacting better than her to this life event.
