Drinking Buddies

It’s a romantic comedy set in a craft brewery. This sounds tailor-made for St. Louis. Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendricks, Jake Johnson and Ron Livingston star in the film. Jason Sudeikis, Wilde’s real-life groom-to-be, also has a part in the film. The movie was shot in three weeks and apparently was entirely improvised while consuming the craft beers on set.  The movie was well received at the SXSW festival which is just icing on the cake of why you should see it.

The World’s End

This is the third installment in the Three Flavours Cornetto film trilogy. Never heard of that? The first two films were Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. The trilogy has been quite successful. The first two films were made for a combined $12 million and grossed $36 million.

The third film follows a group of guys who reunite to try to complete a pub crawl 20 years after their first attempt. Because it’s a science fiction comedy, they come across a robot/alien invasion and have to save the world. Yes, it sounds ridiculous, but the trailer looks fun.

Other notable films coming out this week: You’re Next was filmed in Columbia, Missouri and will fulfill your blood and gore quota for the month.Columbia has a pretty awesome film scene with the True/False Film Fest being the showcase event.  The people of Columbia are pretty proud of this film and the team that put it together.  The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones is the first installment in a series based on the best-selling books. At $60 million, it’s the biggest-budgeted movie opening this weekend.

Still Playing

The Butler

The Butler blew away everyone at the box office last weekend, raking in $24 million.  In comparison, the two other top movies that opened last weekend, Kick-Ass 2 and Jobs brought in a combined $19 million. The film is loosely based on the life of Eugene Allen, a butler who served in the White House for 34 years, under eight presidents. For some lame reason, Mr. Allen’s name was changed in the film to Cecil Gaines. How much would that suck? You get a movie made about your life and they change your name in the film. If you’d rather read about Eugene Allen, check out this link. Oprah Winfrey plays Mrs. Gaines and she plays it pretty well.

Catch It While You Can

If you haven’t seen the blockbusters of the summer yet, there’s still time. Keller Plaza Cine 8 in South County and St. Andrews Cinema in St. Charles give you the opportunity to catch these on the big screen for $3 or less. Man of Steel, White House Down, Monsters University and World War Z are some of the movies that are guaranteed to be worth the money on the big screen.

Make It A Movie Night At Home

Trance is out on DVD now at your local Redbox. The film grossed $22 million at the box office, making back its $20 million budget.  It stars McAvoy as a criminal who steals a famous painting but then loses his memory and can’t remember where he put it. Scary Movie 5 is also out. There’s not much more to say about that movie.

Last Weekend At The Box Office

The Butler of course was the top-grossing movie last weekend with its $24.6 million take. We’re The Millers, Elysium and Planes came in at 2-4 and Kick-Ass 2 rounded out the top five. The combined gross of the top 12 was $121 million, which is the lowest since the last weekend in April.  Millers pulled in $17 million over the weekend and as of yesterday is sitting at $74 million. The Jennifer Aniston film was made for about $37 million. Elysium has pulled in $59 million thus far at the domestic box office, but when you count the $37 million it has pulled in outside the states, it is much closer to making back its $115 million budget.
