For those of you who box up your Spring and Summer clothes each year, only to re-open them in March and end up keeping half of them in the box or throwing some of them out because you think they look old or outdated…hang on a second.
Just as we’ve seen with many of our old styles (by old I’m referring to my age group-from the ’80s and ’90s), they come back. Already we’ve seen: side ponytails, acid wash, shoulder pads, jean shirts and poofy sleeves. And for men: flannel, skinny jeans, newsboy hats, colored sunglasses and long hair.
Realistically, I know that St. Louis isn’t exactly ahead of the curve when it comes to fashion and that not all of the fashion trends that we see on runway shows and in fashion magazines like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar are realistic for our area. However, some of them are, so before you go throwing out old stuff to make room for the “new”, first take into consideration that some of those things might come back before you know it, and second, think about how you could use pieces of an outfit or easily change up an outfit to make it work. Honestly, you may not even need to head to the mall to get in fashion for 2013, shopping could just consist of heading to your parents, or even your grandparents’ house to rummage through their old clothes. You never know what old trends are going to pop back up.
Here are the Spring women’s fashion trends for 2013 so far:
Metallics
The runway version:
The normal, everyday version: A black skirt or shorts with a simple metallic colored tank top. Or just play up the metallic using accessories such as metallic bracelets, nail polish and purse with an everyday tank top and shorts.
Floral Prints
The runway version:
The normal, every day version: A simple floral top with leggings and sandals. Like I said-shopping in your mom’s closet may just have it’s benefits. There’s bound to be a floral print shirt somewhere in there.
Oriental-Inspired Prints
The runway version:
The normal, every day version: It’s unlikely we’re going to see people walking around in kimonos, but the design often uses flowers or plant life and animals like birds or cats so you could always buy sew on patches for an old t-shirt to give it that oriental inspiration.
Pointy Heels
We all have a pair (or 4) of these in our closets with dust on them just waiting to get back in the game. For some, they never even went “out of style.” And if you’re lucky and never threw away your pair of those neon colored pointy toed stilettos from back in the day, then you’re even better off because it’s not just about the pointy toe, but also the fun, bright colors that will be this year’s fashion.
Oversized Ruffles
The runway version:
The normal, every day version: A blouse with ruffles down the middle or maybe even a short skirt with some ruffle paired with a simple tank top. Or if too much ruffle isn’t your thing, ruffled scarves have been in since Fall 2012 so if you don’t already have one, I bet scarves are on sale right now, so you could just add a ruffled scarf to an old shirt and it’s like you have a new outfit.
Baggy Jean Shorts
The runway version:
The normal, every day version: I for one, am not excited about this. It reminds me of the old ’90s style shorts and we’d have Mickey Mouse or some neon color designed patch on them. It’s just not appealing to me, but hey if you lost some weight over they years and have old jeans lying around, you could just cut them off, roll them up, grab a belt and bam, you’re trendy.
Hair trends: While not a clothing style, hair is an accessory that is just as important as a necklace or purse. This year’s most popular trend seems to be bangs. Also messy braids, the color red and short, edgy hair cuts. So if you already have short red hair, bangs, or long hair that you know how to braid, then you’re all set for 2013.
Let’s not forget about the men. There are plenty of new fashion trends for men for 2013 as well:
Neon kicks
The runway version:
This may be a bit much for most men, so colored flip flops (can get at Old Navy) or maybe even just white tennis shoes with colored shoe laces would work as well. If money is tight, check out Payless, even they sell colored shoes.
Stripes (also popular for women)
The runway version:
This is also not something I see most men purchasing, however stripes are everywhere and most likely, every man in America has at least one striped shirt in their closet. The old collared stripe shirt from Polo, Gap, etc. It’s all in for 2013.
The Athletic Look
The runway version:
The normal, every day version I imagine will look a lot like what guys wear today: track pants and a hoodie with the logo of their favorite college team, but I would love to see them in a sport coat or one of those old tennis sweaters. So cute!
Other things I noticed that became popular last Summer that I think we will continue to see more of are: rompers and sheer tops for women and fedoras or newsboy hats for men and color rimmed sunglasses.
What trends do you foresee coming back and/or sticking around in 2013?
