Friday the 13th: The Luckiest Day of the Year

It is ingrained in our culture that this 13th day of the month, if it falls on a Friday, is the unluckiest day of the year. It even has one of the cool ‘fear of’ names; friggatriskaidekaphobia. Try saying that three times [or even once] real fast. And, some interesting facts ajoin this day. For instance, I found this one over on Wikipedia:

Feel the Fear

Friday the 13th  – I think this may go by another name: use-ah-this-ah-to-ah-getoutofwork-ah.

According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day. Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they avoid their normal routines in doing business, taking flights or even getting out of bed. “It’s been estimated that [US]$800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day”.[5] Despite this, representatives for both Delta and Continental Airlines say that their airlines do not suffer from any noticeable drop in travel on those Fridays.[12]

21 million – that is somewhere in the neighborhood of 8% of the population. I have an idea – those 8% should give up their pay for the day and allow the roughly 8% of Americans that are out of work to collect. It’s a huge offset of munificence.  By being generous that day; they can in turn offset the otherwise bad luck they were/are set to have. Sounds like a movement to me. 99%ers welcome.

Say goodbye Mr. Friday 13

Let’s erradicate this unlucky 13 Friday thing by pouring generosity all over it! We can unite in bonds that wave good bye to the dreaded day! We can speak good cheer and good health into the face of the fears and evils. We can begin to look forward to the day. We can build holidays around it. We can build a cottage industry of gifts and greeting cards for those who want to give. We can have parades and festivals that eek with awesomeness and compellingness. We can use the tagline: Feel the Fear and do it Anyway Day! Boom! Take that Mr. Friday 13! How do you like us now?

Let’s Start a Movement

In the spirit of starting/shipping/delivering or putting your money where you mouth is; I bid you this:

My best friend of near eleven years and former wife of five of those years and I are being remarried this Friday. Yes – despite the warnings of living a cat and dog life [not sure what that means] we are remaking that commitment to adventure through this life once more. And, guess what – I happen to think this Friday the 13th is the luckiest day of my life.
