Big Girls Don't Cry

Crying is often a touchy subject. If you cry, it’s a sign of weakness. I was actually listening to a segment on 105.7 one morning on my way to work about when it’s acceptable for men to cry (you know, because crying is just not manly…). They had men calling in to give their opinions on when it’s acceptable, such as a loved one dying or finding out you are sick, etc and Woody and Riz would either approve it or deny it. It was absurd! And yet I know it’s typical. I myself rarely cry and feel embarrassed when I do, except for when I’m alone watching one of Sarah McLaughlin’s ASPCA commercials. I also feel uncomfortable around others who are crying, and often find myself thinking, is this necessary? (I know it’s wrong, but it’s true).

cat Anyway, as I was browsing my usual hot spots for events for a blog, I came across a contest that is currently being promoted: The Heartwarming Rescue Story Contest. It’s people sharing stories about rescue animals in hopes to win this contest to help raise money for animal shelters.  The top three winners receive $2000 to give to the animal shelter that they represent. What an amazing cause! It ends December 18th and you can vote once a day.

Now people who know me know I am a sucker for animals, often calling animal control when I see a stray dog near the highway or luring in a stray cat or dog in the alley with treats so I can find out where it belongs and get it back home safely (and if there’s no collar I just knock on all my neighbors doors until I find the owner-PUT A COLLAR ON YOUR PET PEOPLE, It’s not that difficult!). Ok, sorry, moving on.

dog So I sat reading these stories and it began, first with the throat tightening and then a little extra wetness in the eyes, and then the tears just started streaming down my cheeks and the runny nose…It was full on crying madness! And it made me think, I can hold it together in almost any situation, but when it comes to sad, helpless, animals, I cry like a baby.

I’m asking a favor of you today:

Go to theanimalrescuesite.com, read their stories and vote before December 18th, because 3 of those stories will get to help save and provide food and homes for more of these helpless, unconditionally loving animals. And don’t worry, I’m pretty sure it’s impossible not to tear up a little when reading the stories (unless you physically don’t have tear ducts) so it’s ok to let your emotions show.

*Oh, and in the spirit of Christmas, if there’s a heartwarming story you have or a cause that you feel particularly strongly about, share it. I’d love to hear about it and/or support it if I can.

Doesn’t know how to cook and survives pretty much on macaroni and cheese and pizza, so naturally, loves to eat out at restaurants. However, one day when she is married and has a family to cook for, she would love to take cooking classes and learn awesome skills like the chefs on Iron Chef America...as long as she doesn't have to clean the dishes afterwards.
