Dive Bar Meets Piano Bar

Three of my favorite things in life are dive bars, piano bars and country music.  I heard a word on the street that a piano bar on Jefferson hosted “Country Night” on Tuesday nights.  I checked the website for Keypers Piano Bar and sure enough they advertised ‘Country Night” 8p-10p on Tuesdays.

Another thing I noticed from these reviews was that it was referred to multiple times as a “gay-friendly” establishment.  Coming from out west in Troy, MO this wasn’t a term I was very familiar with at my drinking establishments. I convinced a couple friends to check the place out with me, mainly by selling the female half on “Country Night.”

They asked on the way in what exactly I meant by “gay friendly”? I told them I didn’t really know what to expect.  The rainbow on the window as we walked in was pretty much the extent.

We sat down in the pretty empty bar and ordered a round.  8 o’ clock rolled around and the piano sat empty.  We asked the bartender and he said the piano guy would be there around 8:30 or 9 pm.  We ordered another round.  I decided to learn how to play Keno.  That is most likely a horrible thing judging by how much money I lost in relation to the rounds I played.

Around 9 pm the piano player guy showed up.  His first song was an Elton John classic.  His second was also an Elton John song.  I thought to myself “self, this seems like a bad joke.”  I was ready to hear some country.

We asked the bartender what was going on.  He looked at us like we were either 1) crazy or 2) a few too many rounds in.  We explained what we saw on the website.  He said he was new but he was pretty sure no one knew what we were talking about.  He asked another guy in the bar and he didn’t know what we were talking about.  Rather than apologizing to us for the miscommunication, he told us he would make it ‘Country Night” and told the piano player what was going on.

Problem was the piano guy didn’t really know any country.  I told him I didn’t want to hear Johnny Cash because that was a cop out.  I guess I had it coming when he started in on “Friends in Low Places”.  His only other contribution to this country party was a cover of “Dirt Road Anthem” which pretty much consisted of myself and the female in our group singing the words while he did his best to play along.  With that, “Country Night” was over.

Overall, Keypers is pretty much what you would expect from a dive bar/piano bar combination.  Much like you get exactly what you would expect from a Pizza Hut/ Taco Bell.  There’s a pretty decent menu of cheap pub food and a nice looking patio on the back. Check out Keypers in the Fox Park neighborhood at the corner of Jefferson and Shenandoah.
