Eating Healthy part 1 – Keep a clean kitchen

I decided a while back that I’d like to start cooking at home more. This is a great option because not only does it save money but it’s healthier than eating out. I decide what goes in my food—less fat and less sodium.

I learned very quickly that you can’t cook in a messy kitchen. I had a problem with dishes piling up and pots not being washed. By the time I got off work, I didn’t want to clean first and then cook. I was hungry so I grabbed a bite to eat from a drive thru.

You have to develop a system if you want your kitchen to be usable.

Wash your dishes right away. A clean cooking space is essential to your decision of cooking at home. It is also easier to wash the dishes right after a meal as opposed to the next day when the food is harder to scrape off. (Unless you are lucky enough to have a dishwasher. Put that bad boy to use!)

Don’t forget to throw out bad food. I scan my fridge for old food all the time to make room for the new stuff. About once every couple of months, I’ll check my cupboard for expired canned foods and boxes. It’s really easy to forget about these and then, “oops!” I can’t make that spaghetti I was hoping for…

Clean counters are a must. You need room for chopping veggies and mixing things. Make sure to wipe your counters down with a disinfectant after you cook—I have a problem with veggies landing on the counter when I chop them. This will cut down on your waste.

I hope these little tips help you out. I like to take baby steps when changing my habits… It makes things so much easier! I will be giving you some more baby steps over the next couple of weeks to help you out.
